Sitos Group Secures First-of-Its-Kind Air Permit for Biochar Technology in California

Sitos Group’s biochar reactor undergoing testing as part of pioneering air permit approval in Monterey Bay

Sitos Group, in collaboration with Catalyst Environmental Solutions, has achieved a major regulatory milestone for the biochar industry and the broader field of carbon removal technology. The Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD) has approved an air permit for Sitos Group’s proprietary biochar reactor system—a first for the Monterey Bay region.

This pioneering permit was issued outside the scope of the U.S. EPA’s 40 CFR 60 Subpart EEEE incinerator regulations, signaling a new regulatory path for carbon removal technologies. It sets a powerful precedent for innovators looking to scale carbon-negative solutions across California and beyond.

Catalyst Environmental Solutions is proud to have played a key role in securing this permit. This project is a strong example of how thoughtful, science-based collaboration between regulators and technology developers can unlock new tools in the fight against climate change.

A Regulatory Win for Biochar and Climate Innovation

The approved system converts clean cellulosic biomass into high-quality biochar, a carbon-rich soil amendment known for its ability to:

  • Enhance soil fertility and water retention

  • Support regenerative agricultural and biomass management systems

  • Sequester carbon for centuries, contributing to long-term carbon dioxide removal (CDR)

Setting a New Precedent for Biochar Permitting

This successful permit offers a valuable regulatory blueprint for the company’s future projects. By demonstrating that this type of reactor technology can meet robust air quality standards, Sitos Group is well-positioned to bring similar systems to other air districts throughout California and the U.S.

We’re grateful to Catalyst for guiding us through this permitting process. This approval not only validates the environmental promise of our technology but also lays a strong foundation for expanding carbon-negative infrastructure to more communities.
— Mayo Ryan, CEO and Co-Founder of Sitos Group

A Step Forward for Biochar, Agriculture, and Climate Solutions

As California deepens its commitment to climate-smart agriculture and carbon dioxide removal, this regulatory milestone underscores the importance of modernizing permitting frameworks to support emerging climate technologies. By clearing the path for sustainable innovations, it brings us closer to a more regenerative future.
